Shioda Gozo's Yoshinkan Aikido is the modern derivative of the Aikido given to Shioda Gozo by Ueshiba Morihei in 1932.
Gozo Shioda was born on September 9, 1915, in Tokyo, Japan. Shioda was a small but determined young man. His early exposure to martial arts included Kendo and Judo, in which he excelled, achieving dan rankings in Judo during secondary school. His proficiency instilled confidence in his martial art skills. Doubts arose as he observed Ueshiba and his disciples practicing Aikido, questioning its authenticity. Ueshiba himself noticed Shioda’s uncertainty and invited him to attack. In a pivotal moment, Shioda initiated a front kick towards Ueshiba, who effortlessly countered by throwing him against the wall, leaving Shioda astounded. This incident led Shioda to swiftly decide to become Ueshiba’s disciple
In 1931, Ueshiba opened up the Kobukan or Hell Dojo. This was when Ueshiba was his most physically powerful, and training was said to be very hard. One of his top students at this time was a young Gozo Shioda. Shioda was a dedicated student for over eight years under Ueshiba, rising to prominence as one of his top and most renowned students.
Key Events
In the top photo a young Gozo Shioda appears seated in the middle of the front row, wearing Kendo armor. Gozo Shioda would later name his own Dojo after this one. Shioda's father was a prominent physician and very well connected with the right wing and the military, making Gozo a perfect fit for Morihei Ueshiba's Kobukan Dojo, which also had strong ultra-nationalist and military connections. Gozo would often accompany Morihei Ueshiba as his Otomo, and before each trip his father would see them off with an envelope full of cash for Morihei Ueshiba.
